While we can’t stop the influx of medical jargon heavy information on DHT on the internet, we can hopefully help you to understand DHT and how it relates to your hair loss issues. Let’s get into it.
DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is a male sex hormone (adrogen) that binds to receptors on your scalp and inhibits hair growth. DHT is very much needed in the body as it helps to give males their characteristics like a deeper voice or facial hair. Apart from its benefits, DHT production can lead to a host of negative effects on the body like prostatic hyperplasia, enlarged prostate, and even prostate cancer.
In men, the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5-AR) converts testosterone into DHT. DHT is then thought to cause hair follicles to miniaturize, and this contributes to male pattern hair loss.
THREE PHASES OF HAIR GROWTH
To better understand why DHT is an issue, we first need to understand hair growth.
Hair growth is split into three phases: The Anagen Phase, The Catagen Phase, and The Telogen Phase.
Anagen: This is known as the growth phase. In this phase, hairs remain for 2- 6 years. The longer the hair lasts, the longer the hair grows. Typically, around 80 to 85 percent of the hairs on the head are in this phase.
Catagen: During this phase, hair only lasts for 2 weeks. This allows for the hair follicle to renew itself.
Telogen: The final stage in the process is called the resting phase. The follicle lies dormant for about 1 – 4 months. Typically between 12-20% of hairs are in this phase.
The cycle then begins again.
Hair loss occurs when the follicles slowly shrink and the anagen phase is reduced. The telogen phase then becomes longer.
Due to the shortened growth phase, hair can no longer grow as long as before.
So what does this mean for your hair loss? Well, the good news is that the slow down process is not immediate and happens over time. This means that the earlier you take action, the better the chances of you keeping more hair. This is where we come in to play.
Regrowth Club offers one of the best and most known treatments for blocking DHT, Ketoconazole. This antifungal medication is widely used to treat skin and nail conditions.
Ketoconazole, has been scientifically linked to improvements in hair growth, specifically as a treatment for male pattern baldness. What makes this product a favorite for many users, is its ease in applying the product to the hair and scalp. All that is required is washing the hair with the treatment a few times a week.
